On Wednesday 15th November, Histon Hornets hosted Martin from First Aid Training Services (www.first-aidtrainingservices.co.uk) for three hours of first aid training for their Level 2 Award in Basic Life Support & Defibrillator training. This allowed a group of our managers and coaches to extend their practical first aid knowledge beyond the mandatory FA Introduction to First Aid that all our coaches undertake.
During the session, the Hornets had the opportunity to practice practical skills such as CPR, using an Automatic Electronic Defibrillator, stabilising neck/spine injuries, handling choking and anaphylaxis, recognising and responding to concussion and compression injuries to the head, plus a range of other incidents that we all hope never to need to handle.
The coaches who attended were all impressed with the session, and felt it added to their skills not just as football coaches, but for the rest of their life outside football too.
"I initially thought 3 hours would drag, but it didn't at all. Lots of really useful info and practical feedback from Martin. I'd strongly recommend to others."
"I thought it was great and would recommend it to any coach. He covered a lot of very useful material, in an engaging way. It didn't drag at all. If anything, an extra half and hour could have been helpful."
"There's no substitute for doing some of the exercises in person, because they're about practice and muscle memory (recovery, CPR, defib)"
"Three hours well spent".
As a club we make the safety and wellbeing of our players and volunteers a priority, and are pleased to be able to offer this additional training to our coaches. We're hoping to put another group of coaches through this training course next season.
